Setting up and running a SWIG group
SWIG members: please send in your ideas and documents for this section.
Overlapping presentations
One
thing I have organized at UWEC is a monthly (or more) gathering
called "Women On Wednesdays" -- It is NOT just for geographers
however -- It began a few years ago when we realized quite
a few women's organizations on campus were sponsoring overlapping
presentations/topics. We organized as many women's groups
as possible and "pooled" our resources, and now jointly sponsor
speakers and presentations. We received funding from our
Provost to pay for flyers and for Wine and Cheese at evening
receptions and for desserts at brown bag presentations. The
different women's groups help take turns providing topics
and speakers. --from Lisa Theo, Asst Professor and Internship
Coord, UW-Eau Claire.
Meeting facilitation and multi-voting
Business meetings for any group can be tiresome and unproductive
unless they have some structure--but you also want fair input from
everyone, right? This document, "Meetings
that Work," is a set of
guidelines and voting techniques that I've collected and adapted
over the years while running some very tough meetings. Choosing from
these can take the pressure off of the meeting leader while allowing
satisfying and productive input from everyone. --from Melanie McCalmont,
Grad Student, UW-Madison.
Women's history ideas
Ideas from the National Women's History Project (NWHP) on activities
for events about women. It's geared to Women's History Month but
would be adaptable to celebrating women in geography.
