August 2007 - New SWIGGIS group forms in Austin Texas for professionals

Hello,

I thought I'd let you know that some of us ex-SWIG members here in TX have recently formed a new group: Supporting Women in Geography and GIS (SWIGGIS). We are a professional organization of women Geographers with an emphasis on GIS professionals as well.

Our website is http://swiggis-austin.org/. We are only a few months old! We alternate between educational/professional development-type meetings and happy hours.

Thanks!

GIS Analyst/Environmental Specialist, Chiang, Patel & Yerby, Inc.

AAG 2007 17-21 April in San Francisco

Hello, SWIG-sters!

The newly formed Supporting Women in Geography (SWIG) chapter at Humboldt State University invites you to a breakfast get-together (pay your own way) during the upcoming AAG meeting in San Francisco.

Join us at "The Cafe" at the Hilton on Thursday, April 19, beginning at 7:00 am for informal discussion and to share information about your group's activities. This is also a great opportunity for students and faculty interested in forming SWIG chapters at their own campuses to learn more about the organization, so please spread the word!

For more information about SWIG, visit the national home page at:
http://www.geography.wisc.edu/swig/

For more information about the breakfast, email Angela Crane or Joy Adams.

Looking forward to meeting you!

The NCGE 2005 calendar of women leaders in the history of geography education in the US is now available. Thirteen women are featured (one month is a two-fer), with photographs and accompanying text relating aspects of their careers. Their work ranges from the 1890s to the 1980s. Among them are Zonia Baber, founder of the Chicago Geographical Society, peace and anti-racist activist; Edith Parker who made notable contributions in innovative approaches at the U of Chicago; Martha Krug Genthe, founding member of the AAG; Alvina Storm, for whom the geog. building is named at San Diego State where she was a long-term faculty member, and others, many of them Presidents of NCGE; Thelma Glass, a leading civil rights activist and professor at Alabama State.

The calendar is available from NCGE for $10, plus $1 shipping and handling.

AAG SWIG EVENT
As co-President of the Penn State Supporting Women in Geography (SWIG) chapter, I invite you to join us for a happy hour at the Park Grill at 11 N. Michigan street (just around the corner from the hotel and within walking distance to the book store) Before the GPOW AAG wine and cheese reception on Thursday March 9. We'll get started around 5pm, and hopefully you can all join! In previous year's some of our SWIG (and other chapter's) membership has organized a SWIG panel, but as far as I am aware of that is not happening this year. Hopefully this happy hour will be a time to meet new faces, exchange thoughts on the prospects of SWIG and share what we've all been doing over the last year since Denver---some energy was moving in that room in April!

Thanks and best, Morgan
