News from the Geography Library

from Tom Tews:

Since Spring 2005, Clara Salazar has joined our STAFF as Assistant Librarian. She comes to us indirectly from a stint at the Geology Library. Richard Schwartz leaves us after 5+ years, transferring over to the InterLibrary Loan Office at Memorial Library.

A greater percentage of our JOURNAL holdings will be via online sources only. MadCat was upgraded over the summer - diacritics and vernacular are now visible. In response to user demand and to make access to online resources simpler, the UW-Madison Libraries launched the E-Resource Gateway. The E-Resource Gateway presents all of the libraries' electronic resources in a single list. It allows users to locate material in a number of ways - using alphabetical lists, searching by resource name, using an expanded subject list or doing keyword searches to locate electronic resources of interest.

Our NEW BOOKS LIST is now directly derived from MadCat. We missed a couple of lists over summer because of the computer upgrades, but should be back on track again (see our website). In concert with the department webmaster, we have started a citation listing of writings authored by alumni, current and future geographers that the library has acquired and knows about. Please let us know if we missed your article, book chapter or book.

We are currently investigating an upgrade to the furnishings of our reading/study room. Any donations of ideas and money are welcome.

Over the summer, Tom and Laura moved to a new residence in the Dudgeon-Monroe Neighborhood of Madison. Our new home has less lawn than the old one. It's all plants, trees, bushes and weeds. We look forward to next year when those sunflowers won't take over the yard.
