Thanks to Alumni for Career Portraits

Many thanks to all the Science Hall alumni who took the time to send in career information for the department website. Not only are we proud of your work since your time here, but incoming and prospective students can see the depth and breadth that our field takes us. More portraits are always welcome! Cartography Lab News

Onno Brouwer reports that the Cartography Lab has been a part of some very interesting projects this year, including:

  • Wisconsin State Bike Map 2005 Edition for the Wisconsin department of Transportation--4 maps, 8 regions of the state with the latest status of bike routes in Wisconsin
  • 64 maps for Bill Wyckoff's upcoming book "On the Road" from University of Wisconsin press
  • Finals maps for the book "Buildings of Wisconsin" by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin
  • Maps for the upcoming book on Roberto Clemente by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss
  • A map series on Living Museum Sites for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin
  • 35 other smaller map projects for UW faculty, staff, and off-campus clients
  • The "Great River Road Bicycle Map" for the Wisconsin Dept of Transportation (Prairie du Chien section below)


News Archives now Online

News items from the Department of Geography website are now online at News Archives. Stories about department events and people are indexed by year, then by story title or main person of interest. Archives are also included of non-department stories of general interest in Geography. Photograph archives will be gradually expanded. If you have any department-related photographs, flyers, slides, posters, maps, or articles, we encourage you to send them by post to the webteam for inclusion in the archives.


Lyle Gorder (1923-2005)

Lyle Gorder (MS '49) passed away in Tucson, Arizona on July 6, 2005. Lyle received his BS in Economics and his MS in Geography at UW-Madison. Lyle was a former professor of Geography at the UW-Manitowoc campus and at UW-Green Bay from 1954 to 1980. Lyle was passionate about all things geographic, and he enjoyed lecturing, speaking to community groups, and taking part in service projects related to his professional expertise. He was a noted expert on the geography and geology of Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. Lyle assisted U.S. Rep Henry Royce to develop the Wisconsin Ice Age Trail.

Lyle's wife, Christine, writes that the family has suggested that memorials in Lyle Gorder's memory be made to the Department of Geography through the UW Foundation (http://www.uwfoundation.wisc.edu) . The Gorder home address is 6419 E. Calle de San Alberto, Tucson, AZ 85710.
