Lisa Naughton
Information for prospective students:
Thank you for your interest. If you are considering contacting me as a potential graduate advisor, please read the following first.
– Lisa Naughton, 8/8/09
I serve as advisor to graduate students in both the Department of Geography and in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies (in either the Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development Program or the Environmental Resources Program). For an overview of these programs or for detailed information on degree requirements and application procedures, you should consult program web pages (www.geography.wisc.edu or www.ies.wisc.edu) and communicate directly with administrative staff (for Geography please contact the graduate coordinator, Sharon Kahn at smkahn@geography.wisc.edu, and for Nelson Institute, Jim Miller jemiller@wisc.edu).
I am unable to accept more than one or two new students each year because of my heavy administrative responsibilities and because of my commitment to current advisees. In reviewing applications, I am most interested in students with strong academic backgrounds and significant field experience who are interested in human dimensions of biodiversity and wildlife conservation, and protected area management in developing countries. I do not have any research grants or fellowships to support graduate students at present. But there are graduate funding opportunities available on a highly competitive basis, including university-funded Fellowships, Title VI Foreign Language Areas Studies, and CHANGE Fellowships. Teaching assistantships are also often available. Again, please consult administrative staff in Geography or Nelson Institute regarding funding opportunities. The staff can also help you identify other potential faculty advisors (UW Madison has an amazing depth of faculty!)
When you contact me, please include in your email or letter:
- detailed statement (~2-3 paragraphs) of your research and professional interests, your field experience, and why you want to attend graduate school,
- the names and institutions of 2-3 people you will ask for letters of recommendation (including at least one representative of an academic institution, and
- your undergraduate major, university, GPA and GRE scores (including your percentile scores, not just the raw scores).
Again, thank you for your interest.
