Science HallThe UW-Madison Department of Geography is a leader in the field of geography and offers exceptional opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate education. The Department has been consistently rated as one of the best in the country, currently rated as the number two graduate program, and for over 100 years has been the training ground for generations of outstanding geographers.

The strength of our department is reflected in our ability to attract top-caliber students, compete for significant research funding, and win major awards, including more Guggenheim Fellowships than any other geography department. Our faculty have been recognized both by the university and within our profession with such honors as UW named chairs, and AAG lifetime achievement awards.

Our Geography Program is divided into five major thematic areas: physical geography, environmental studies, human geography, area studies and global systems, as well as cartography and GIS. Degrees in Geography are offered at the B.A./B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. In addition, students can earn a B.S. or M.S. in Cartography and GIS, or they can enroll in our very successful 1-year GIS Certificate Program.

UW-Madison is a world-class research university that provides many opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaboration. The Geography Department is an important member of the UW community and our faculty serve in prominent positions both within the University and in our larger professional communities. We are fortunate to have both the Robinson Map Library (with over 500,000 items) and the UW Geography Library housed within Science Hall. Combined, these libraries represent one of the largest and best collections of geographic materials anywhere. We are also proud of the accomplishments of our graduates, many of whom have gone on to prominence within government, industry, and academia.
