Geography 538, Assignment #3 Eating the tropics?

This assignment asks you to consider the origin of the foods you consume on a daily basis. During one day, keep a list of any plant item you consume, including beverages (like coffee, cola or juice). Make a separate entry for each type of plant, even if they are consumed together (e.g. your pizza slice may contain green peppers, olives, tomatoes, black peppers, oregano, wheat, sugar, onions and garlic). For each item, record the following:

1) cultivation site: i.e. where the food was grown (check stickers, labels or signs in grocery store), use the following categories: WI (Wisconsin), USA, S. A. (South America), MCA (Meso and Central America, includes Mexico), SEA (southeast Asia), CA (central Asia), Europe, Africa, Australia, or Unknown.

and, 2) the geographic origin of the plant (use botanical index on reverse of this page).

If information is unavailable, leave the space blank. Mark the item you most cherish- that you can’t through the day without - with an *.

Grading: 10 point assignment, pass/fail, duein class OCT. 16. 1 point deducted for each day late.

2 points extra credit for adding a food plant species or correcting one on the botanical index, but you must attach a photocopy of a published, academic reference on the species' origin (internet references will not be accepted). Max: 6 pts extra credit.
