PUBLIC POOL ACTIVISTS

MADISON,  WISCONSIN

A POOL AS A MEANS TO BETTER MADISON COMMUNITY’S:

HEALTH

§                       EXERCISE

With a pool in Madison residents can realize increased health.  Swimming offers an intense yet low impact workout.  It also helps to increase range of motion, which helps greatly in the healing of serious injuries.

§                       COOLING CENTER

During the hot summer months, a pool will cool the surrounding area by serving as a thermal mass and also through evaporation.  This is particularly for those who don’t have air conditioning, and lack a cool place to relax.

§                       SWIM LESSONS

By offering swimming lessons, the pool can improve peoples lives.  Children can meet and play, and adults can learn more in a helping environment.

COMMUNITY

§                       GATHERING SPACE

A public pool would be an excellent safe place for
people, especially children, to meet and enjoy a hot
summer day.  A well-placed pool would also serve as a
place for people of all ages, races, and classes to
interact.

§                       COMMUNITY CENTER

People throughout Madison would have the pool as a
great public resource to use for recreation.  It would
build a sense of identity and community for the entire
city.

ECONOMY

§                       EMPLOYMENT

By building a swimming pool in the downtown area, we
could be creating approximately 60 extremely desirable
jobs for college students.  This will allow people to
work outside, in a fun and exciting environment.  And
since it’s seasonal, it would not interfere with school.

§                       INTERNAL REVENUE

By charging a nominal fee for the use of the facilities,
the pool would be self-sustaining with employees'
wages and general maintenance and supplies.  Whether
those using the pool are there for just the day or they
purchase a seasonal membership, they are paying to
keep the pool open.
