Undergraduate Advising

Geography studentsFaculty advising is an important process for students switching to a Geography major or who are already in the program. Each advisor works in a concentration within the major: physical, people-environment, human, and cartography/GIS.

Undergraduates may also call or visit the department Undergraduate Coordinator to get general information. Call (608) 262-2138 or email Sunshine Jansen.

How to declare a Major in Geography or Cartography:

  1. Meet with the advisor for your anticipated area of concentration (see list of advisors for details and office hours.) CALSstudents wanting to double major must see a Dean in CALS first.
  2. Complete the L&S Major Declaration form (available from your advisor.)  Once the form has been signed, return it to the undergraduate coordinator in Room 160 Science Hall.  Be sure to note if you are a non-L&S double major – or want to transfer to L&S – as there will be extra paperwork required.
  3. If you are declaring Honors in the Major, a separate form will be needed. This form must be signed by the Honors advisor, stamped by the undergraduate coordinator in Room 160, and then taken in person to the L&S Honors Office.

During your Major Coursework in Geography:

Geography faculty advisors will help you plan your coursework and degree program. They can assist you in matching your Geography degree with other coursework, including related Certificate programs.

Before registering for each semester, or as advised by the faculty, the student should meet with their advisor to review the in-progress coursework and ensure that it will meet the requirements. Before registering for your last semester, meet with your advisor to go over all coursework and your DARS report.
