Mark's Picks for Exceptional Graphic Design

1. National Geographic - www.nationalgeographic.com
A veteran of good map design, almost everything they produce is top-caliber. I'm especially fond of their traditional "poster maps" supplements to the magazine, and the new interactive maps and stories on their ever-expanding website.

2. Pop-out City Maps - www.popoutmap.com
No one fits more in a smaller space and makes it look so good. Highly functional, I wouldn't travel to a new city without one.

3a. Stuart Allan Cartography / Raven Maps - www.allancartography.com
Best use of color I've ever seen - the new standard in reference maps.

3b. Atlas of Oregon, 2nd Ed. - http://www.uopress.com/
If there is a more beautiful atlas out there, I haven't found it yet.

4. National Park Service Maps - http://www.nps.gov/
I've always enjoyed their fold-out maps for the parks - which continue to improve with their new breed of terrain/hillshaded maps.

5. DK Books "Eyewitness" Travel Books - http://www.dk.com/
Their travel guides are the best, thanks in large part to the amazing talents of their graphic design and layout team. Their oblique "streetscape" large-scale maps are no small cartographic feat.

6. Mapping Census 2000 - http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/atlas.html
This atlas contains a wealth of information that is both beautiful and useful. Choropleth maps have never looked so good.

7. ESRI Map Books - http://www.esri.com/mapmuseum/
These books are the annually published by ESRI to showcase what they consider to be the best maps produced with ESRI software.

Bibliographic Resources:

List of references complied by David Woodward for previous incarnations of 572 - i.e., this is highly relevant material! PDF.

A comprehensive bibliography complied by members of the ICA Commission on Visualization (June 2000) - contains over 600 references selected by Commission members as being most valuable in key research areas in GIScience. PDF.

References from Mark's dissertation (keywords: cartography, animation, geovisualization, user-testing) . PDF.

Online Material:

In the next few weeks, this is where you find material related to lectures: example diagrams, maps and occasionally some notes from class. Complete class notes will NOT be put here....it is still your responsibility to attend lecture and lab and take notes for yourself. This page will contain supplimental material only and if Mark says "I've put it online" this is where you'll find it :-)
